Penthouse A at 497 Greenwich Street is a duplex penthouse in downtown Manhattan built for English art gallery owner Jonathon Carroll. Carroll developed the entire building in 2003 and sold most of the apartments as raw spaces, but kept Penthouse A, on the 10th and 11th floor, for himself. It remained a raw space until 2010, when Sally Rigg of Rigg Design was hired to build out the space for sale.
The pre-existing dramatic 26 feet high by almost 50 feet wide stretch of curtain wall glass overlooks the Hudson River. Rigg designed the apartment to maximize this view from almost every room. A large open plan living/kitchen/dining room with a highly reflective epoxy floor covers most of the 10th floor and features an eight foot long fireplace. The entire length of this space opens onto a deck with plantings.
The master suite, with unlimited views across the Hudson River to New Jersey and the Statue of Liberty, is on the 11th floor. The master bathroom has an open double shower open against the curtain wall glass, with towering slabs of Aurora Dorada marble. The 11th floor also has a home office, guest bedroom, and laundry.
A stone staircase leads up from the 11th floor to the roof garden terrace. The terrace features an outdoor kitchen, pergola living space, and floating viewing deck with stunning views of downtown Manhattan and New York Harbor.
