Ling Nam, a 115 square meter Chinese eaterie is located on the second floor of one of the busiest shopping malls in the city. The restaurant is the latest branch of an establishment with a history of over 60 years that first saw its start as a small noodle shop in the China Town district of Manila. While the client wanted to make sure their shop looked very modern and active, the designers also wanted to incorporat this sense of history in its design, and came up with a modern and stylized version of the Chinese tea house. It used the traditional color scheme of red and white with an accent of Chinese blue. The red lattice work seen throughout the interior provides a strong unifying factor that pulls the store together, as well as giving it that “tea house” feel. The interior also has a strong graphic element, as reflected in the sepia toned photo panel describing the store’s inception, and the image of the stacked blue and white tea cups reflected in the wall mural as well as in some of the table tops. The large graphic mural of the bicycle with the red window d house in its backdrop echoes the red lattice work in the restaurant. Another focal point is the glass viewing window that shows the noodles being handmade. An added bonus is that it expands the space, making the seating area feel more spacious.
